Photo courtesy Trupanion Insurer Trupanion announced on November 26 it reached $3 billion in paid claims, helping more than 2.4 million cats and dogs receive recommended veterinary care. Trupanion's paid claims went from $1 billion in 2020, 20 years after the company launched. "Pet healthcare should not be a luxury few can afford. With every claim we pay for our members, we’re removing the need for a financial conversation and delivering on our mission to help pet parents budget for the care of their pet,” says Margi Tooth, CEO and president of Trupanion. “To cross $3 billion in paid claims is a huge acknowledgment of the problem we’re solving." Since Trupanion passed $2 billion in January 2023, it has paid an average $48.6 million per month – or $1.5 million per day – to veterinary practices and clients. Of the $48.6 million paid invoices per month, approximately $23.2 million has been paid directly to practices through Trupanion’s VetDirect Pay, within Trupanion’s Veterinary Portal that enables instant invoice payments to practices, the company reports. “Trupanion helps alleviate financial burdens by paying invoices in real-time for its members. About 85% of our Veterinary Portal claims are paid directly to veterinary practices, with two-thirds of all Portal payouts made in under a minute,” says Dr. Steve Weinrauch, BVMS, MRCVS, chief product/veterinary officer at Trupanion. Analyzing these claims, data scientists at Trupanion analyzed more than 11.1 million paid invoices from 2000 to 2024 and determined allergy/otitis and renal failure were the top health conditions for dogs and cats, respectively. 5 most common claims for dogs (Ranked by total number of claims since 2000) 1) Allergy and otitis: $128,471,744 in paid claims 2) Diarrhea: $66,742,702 in paid claims 3) Limping: $78,592,984 in paid claims 4) Vomiting: $80,462,404 in paid claims 5) Mass lesion: $103,604,609 in paid claims 5 most common claims for cats (Ranked by total number of claims since 2000) 1) Renal failure: $9,618,255 in paid claims 2) Vomiting: $18,401,635 in paid claims 3) Diarrhea: $6,128,976 in paid claims 4) Diabetes: $5,822,469 in paid claims 5) Hyperthyroidism: $3,456,438 in paid claims
