IDEXX Laboratories sues former employees, Vets First ChoiceAugust 8, 2018IDEXX Laboratories, a veterinary diagnostic testing and product manufacturer, is taking two former employees and Vets First Choice, a prescription management company, to court. The company's lawsuit, filed Aug. 3 in U.S. District Court, states that Dan Leach and Agostino Scicchitano did not reveal they resigned from IDEXX to gain employment with Vets First Choice and engaged in alleged "actual and/or threatened misappropriation of trade secrets." The lawsuit claims the pair took confidential materials from company computers when they moved to their new employer. This takes on significance several reasons, not least of all the announcement in April by Vets First Choice and Henry Schein Inc. that Henry Schein would merge its animal health business with Vets First Choice to create Vets First Corp., an independent publicly traded company. A recent analysis by Zack's Investment Research of IDEXX concluded that while IDEXX had been outperforming in its industry, Henry Schein's spin off of its animal health business poses a threat to the company. Henry Schein to spin off animal health businessApril 23, 2018Henry Schein Inc. announced today that it will spin off its $3.5 billion animal health supplies business, Henry Schein Animal Health (HSAH), and combine it with Vets First Choice. The new publicly traded company, Vets First Corp., will be headquartered in Portland, Maine, where Vets First Choice is located currently. The deal combines Henry Schein's veterinary supplies, software for practices and distribution network with Vets First Choice's prescription management platform. Ben Shaw, founder and CEO of Vets First Choice, will become chairman of the board and CEO of the new company. Stanley Bergman, chairman of the board and CEO of Henry Schein, will be a Vets First Choice board member and continue in his role as CEO and chairman of Henry Schein. Karen Prange, executive vice president of Henry Schein Inc. and CEO of the global animal health, medical and dental surgical group, will leave the company. Henry Schein supports CSU sports medicine and rehabilitation veterinarianMarch 13, 2018Henry Schein Inc. announced its support of a three-year residency position with the Small Animal Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation service at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Colorado State University. The company's donation of health care supplies supports Ilan Frank, DVM, a second-year resident with the service. The Small Animal Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation team provides nonsurgical orthopedic care to sporting, hunting, working, and service animals, as well as pets with mobility issues. The veterinarians on the team use innovative imaging techniques, medical treatments, and rehabilitation to help animals regain strength, speed, and endurance after an injury. The donation is an initiative of Henry Schein Animal Health, Henry Schein Medical, and Henry Schein Cares, the company's global corporate social responsibility program. As a veterinarian in the Israeli Army, Dr. Frank helped to establish the veterinary services of the Army's Special Operations and served as the chief veterinarian of its K9 unit for 15 years. Henry Schein acquires interest in Brazilian veterinary product distributorJanuary 9, 2018Henry Schein Inc. has acquired a 60 percent ownership investment in ABASE, a family-owned distributor of veterinary healthcare products with a strong presence in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Headquartered in Jaguariuna, ABASE sells pharmaceuticals, pet food, diagnostic equipment, and consumables primarily to the companion animal, swine, poultry, and bovine segments. Financial terms were not disclosed. "This ownership investment strengthens our position in Brazil's animal health market, which we established earlier this year in the state of Rio de Janeiro with our investment in Tecnew. It also diversifies our relationship with global suppliers and approximately doubles our vol. "We look forward to leveraging the expertise between Tecnew and ABASE to further advance both businesses and to focus on new opportunities to help veterinarians in Brazil run more efficient, successful practices while providing the highest quality care."
