Auburn CVM, fine arts museum enhance student radiology trainingSeptember 19, 2018The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art have teamed up to teach veterinary students how to sharpen their radiology-reading skills. Students volunteered at the museum, examined works of art on display, and were asked to objectively describe the visual details they saw in each one and use the details to interpret the artwork. They then, along with Rachel Moon, DVM, DACVR, assistant clinical professor of radiology in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine, and Scott Bishop, curator of academic and public programs at the museum, entered the classroom to discuss their findings and interpretations. At the end of the session, students applied their newly developed skill set to examine radiographs and other diagnostic images. "Interpretation is based on our actual experience. There can be a lot of different interpretations based on a central theme," said Dr. Moon. "This is a pilot program for the college, but one that other medical training programs have adopted and one I felt was applicable to the clinical education of our student veterinarians." Auburn Vet Camp introduces students to veterinary medicineJune 19, 2018The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is offering hands-on summer camps to middle and high school students to give them an idea of what a career in veterinary medicine entails. Conducted by students, faculty, and staff of the college, Vet Camp takes students into classrooms, laboratories, and clinical facilities to give them a glimpse of veterinary studies and the animal health industry as a whole. Kimberley Moyers and Trey McElroy, both third-year veterinary students at Auburn, are Vet Camp's student directors, overseeing more than 20 second- and third-year veterinary students who work with campers. "Vet Camp is a week of hands-on education where we show the students as many aspects of veterinary medicine as possible," said McElroy. "We incorporate learning with many fun-filled activities. We want to immerse them in the medical side, along with showing the many other aspects of the veterinary field." A total of 100 students will attend the camps, which are coordinated in partnership with Auburn's Office of Professional Continuing Education. Auburn to strengthen vet medicine in rural KentuckyDecember 5, 2017The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is directing a program to strengthen veterinary services to underserved rural populations in Kentucky through a grant provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Veterinary Services Grant Program and in partnership with Kentucky veterinarians. The $237,233 grant allows the college to create a program to "develop, implement, and sustain private veterinary services through education, training, recruitment, placement and retention of veterinarians and students of veterinary medicine," said Dan Givens, DVM, Ph.D., associate dean for academic affairs at Auburn's College of Veterinary Medicine. It is one of 13 grants by USDA's National Institute of Food & Agriculture. Objectives of the grant are: Connect veterinarians serving in rural geographic areas where additional veterinarians are needed with veterinary students interested in working in those areas; Provide quality educational opportunities for veterinary students in business management and sustainability in rural veterinary practice; Provide quality continuing education at a reduced cost to veterinarians serving in designated rural areas of unmet needs; Provide business management education and practice sustainability consultation to rural veterinary practitioners in underserved areas, and Facilitate and create networking opportunities that assist graduating veterinarians with transitioning into sustainable careers in rural underserved …
