Four Kansas State University veterinary students receive $1,000 AVMA scholarshipsMarch 7, 2019Four Kansas State University veterinary students have each been awarded $1,000 by the Auxiliary to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Legacy Endowed Scholarship. The awards are given to students at 32 AVMA-accredited veterinary colleges in the U.S., the Atlantic Veterinary College in Canada, and St. George's University and Ross University in the Caribbean to support their education. This year, the scholarships went to third-year veterinary medicine students, Danielle Pickering and Katelyn Guill-Sanchez, and second-year veterinary medicine students, Rebecca Tomasek and Katya Luckenbach. "This scholarship will help me relieve some of the financial burden of veterinary school, as I pursue a career in small animal or mixed medicine, and eventually a doctorate," Pickering says. "As a veterinary student who is interested in public health and international veterinary medicine, I am always looking for educational opportunities to travel to other countries to experience what the field of veterinary medicine is like in them," Luckenbach says. "Being an out-of-state student, it is hard to justify borrowing extra money for electives involving international travel, so having the privilege of being awarded this scholarship will help to fund my upcoming international veterinary tours elective." AVMF offers resources, seeks support for colleagues affected by California firesAugust 3, 2018As massive wildfires rage across California, the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AMVF) is working to help veterinary colleagues and animals in need. The Carr Fire, a week old, is the sixth most destructive fire in California history, destroying nearly 1,000 structures and claiming several lives. With less than 30 percent containment achieved and continued hot, dry, and windy weather conditions, it's expected to worsen before headway is made. The AVMF has been in contact with several area animal clinics that are not only inundated with emergency cases, but also caring for animals that residents could not take with them when evacuating on a moment's notice. The AVMF, which grants to veterinarians to ensure emergency medical care of animal victims and relief grants to help veterinarians and veterinary students who require basic necessities due to a disaster, is seeking support in its efforts to help as many colleagues as possible. Donations to the AVMF Disaster Relief Fund can be made at avmf.org/donate. Use the AVMF Code "Disaster Relief" when filling out the donation form. AVMF provides $25,000 in disaster relief to Montana tribal nationsMarch 16, 2018The American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) announced that it has given a $25,000 grant to support Montana reservations in need of hay due to the impact of recent winter storms. The grant will go toward replenishing hay supplies to help thousands of cattle and horses in the Fort Belknap, Northern Cheyenne, and Blackfeet tribal reservations. These tribes have reported more than 150 livestock deaths due to the extreme cold and record amounts of snowfall. This winter's hay shortages were compounded by Montana's drought last summer and the wildfires that damaged more than one million acres in the state during the fall of 2017. "The weather events we've had over the past several months have really strained feed resources here in Montana," said Ben Thomas, Montana Dept. of Agriculture director. "We are grateful for the assistance of our national and international partners in helping these communities during their times of need." The hay will help cover five days of food for the animals in each tribe; after that, the tribes should be out of their emergency operations period and be able to restore access to their hay stores or purchase hay from elsewhere in Montana. "We're pleased to be able provide this grant …
