Surgical instrument inspection, also often referred to as instrument care and handling, begins at the point of use.

When placing single instruments in a peel pouch, the ratchet must be in the opened position, not "clicked." When assembling an instrument pack, never close the ratchets of hemostats or needle holders. However, for safety purposes, close the Backhaus towel clamps on the first ratchet to prevent glove and finger punctures.
