Veterinary nurses and technicians looking to enhance their self-advocacy communication skills may benefit from North American Veterinary Community’s (NAVC’s) upcoming webinar. Slated for June 1, “Veterinary Nurse Empowerment: Improving Compensation and Turnover” will explore current trends in pay and benefits for veterinary nurses/technicians. Participants will receive advice on how to calculate and convey their value to employers, as well as tips on how they can determine a practice’s culture and working conditions before accepting a job. “According to a study commissioned by NAVC, veterinary nurse/technicians find caring for animals is meaningful and purposeful work, yet a third plan to leave the profession within five years,” says NAVC CEO, Gene O’Neill. “The NAVC is committed to helping veterinary healthcare teams thrive. Staff turnover is a barrier to this and the veterinary team’s ability to provide the best level of care to patients.” Moderated by NAVC program specialist Samantha Sacasa, CVT, the webinar features a panel of credentialed veterinary nurses and technicians, including: Leslie Boudreau, BASVT, RVTg, CVPM, PHR, PHRca, SPHR, practice manager at Animal Hospital of Huntington Beach in California; Rebecca Rose, AAS, CVT, Veterinary Practice News contributor, certified career coach, and founder/president of CATALYST Veterinary Professional Coaches; and Ashli Selke, RVT, CVT, instructional technologist in Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s veterinary nursing program and president of National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA). “Veterinary nurses need to advocate for themselves,” Selke says. “We are a vital part of the veterinary health care team and are in short supply simply because the pay for many is below the poverty line. By advocating for yourself, you can set a higher bar—not only for yourself, but for those that follow.” The webinar, which is part of NAVC’s Veterinary Nurse Empowerment Initiative, will take place June 1 at noon EST.
