The program, part of a $1 million Petsmart Charities grant program, aims to provide 6,750 surgeries to pit bulls in 30 states. “Our national grant program gives much-needed help to pit bull terriers that are especially at risk,” said Susana Maddalena, executive director of Petsmart Charities. “Through the ‘Primp Your Pit’ promotion and our ongoing efforts to make affordable spay/neuter surgeries available to the public, pet parents can prevent unwanted litters and ensure their pet lives a long, happy life.” Participating clinics receive grant money to help lower the cost of spay and neuter surgeries and help pay for marketing materials and advertising, Petsmart Charities reported. A searchable database of participating clinics is available at www.petsmartcharities.org through the Spray/Neuter link. The database is a collaborative effort of Petsmart Charities and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. <HOME>
FDA Aims To Enhance Antimicrobial Drug Use DataJuly 27, 2012 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is seeking public comment on how the agency can collect more detailed information on antimicrobial drug use and how best to disseminate that information without stepping on manufacturers’ toes, the FDA reported today. Under current law, manufacturers are required to report how much of each antimicrobial product they sell and distribute and for which species the product is indicated. However, some classes of antimicrobials are indicated for more than one species, making it difficult for the FDA to determine how much of each product is being used in each species. The Government Accountability Office concluded that the information collected by the FDA does not provide sufficient data to analyze trends in antimicrobial resistance, so the agency is requesting that manufacturers provide an estimate on how much of each drug is being used on each species. The enhanced information would allow the agency to better correlate antimicrobial drug use to antimicrobial resistance, as measured by the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System. The FDA also publishes antimicrobial sales and distribution reports for public consumption, but under current law the agency is allowed only …

InFURvention Contest Runs Until Aug. 17July 25, 2012 Banfield Pet Hospital and Animal Planet’s resident pet trainer, Victoria Stilwell, are asking U.S. cat owners to upload videos of their real-life struggles to get their cat into a carrier before a visit to the veterinarian. The “inFURvention” campaign began July 18, 2012, and runs through Aug. 17, 2012. The goal is to document pet owners’ difficulties in getting cats into carriers and off to the vet and increase awareness of the importance of regular veterinary visits. One winning inFURvention video will be chosen. The cat owner will receive a year’s worth of free preventive veterinary care and an at-home visit and training consultation from Stilwell. “Pet owners don’t have to be a professional in order to train their cats to get into a carrier,” Stillwell said. “All it takes is some practice and simple behavior, and catfights will soon be a thing of the past.” A 2011 Bayer Animal Health study noted that of the 86 million pet cats in the United States, one-third miss out on veterinarian visits because their owners want to avoid the travel hassle.
