"A green sea turtle came to us March 13, 2023, after it was found off a fishing pier. It was hooked by a fisherman, who knew not to reel it in (which causes further trauma suspending turtles by the hooks in their mouth/neck). He pulled it up with a net and called a hotline number on the pier to have him transported to a rehabilitation facility.
"We see young green sea turtles that know easy meals can be found near fishing piers. They get fish chum that is thrown off the pier when people clean fish, or they go for bait. This turtle obviously had been eating a few fish. Sometimes people just cut the line and the turtle swims away with the hook. Luckily, the last hook this turtle ate had a responsible human on the other end who sent him off to a rehab center for help. The turtle also had a metal fragment of a hook stuck near the top part of the shell. Someone cut this hook and let the turtle go with the fragment. We surgically removed this, as well before he was released.
