The Rose Brooks Center, a Kansas City, Mo.-based family violence agency, in partnership with Bayer Animal Health, opened a shelter to provide lodging for pets of families living at the center’s emergency shelter. The center held a grand opening for the Paws Place pet shelter on Wednesday, featuring an appearance by Hank, a Great Dane that served as inspiration for the pet shelter. Hank suffered two broken ribs and a fractured hip when he protected his owner from her boyfriend. The center allowed Hank to stay despite its “no animal” policy. “Our work every day is to keep families safe and help them rebuild their lives,” said Susan Miller, Rose Brooks Center CEO, “And pets are part of that family too. We’ve simply redefined what ‘family’ means to us.” The shelter provides quarters for up to eight pets per night and is the second of its kind in the United States. <HOME>
