Dr. Yoho, 57, turned his attention to politics while working as a large animal veterinarian in Gainesville, Fla. His years in practice and his interaction with farmers, ranchers and business owners made him concerned for "the state of our nation" and led him to realize it was time to "stand up for America," according to his campaign website.

"We did it!" Yoho told supporters today on his campaign Facebook page. "Last night...you all elected me to represent you in Washington. I couldn't be more honored and humbled. This is a win for the people of the 3rd Congressional District. We are sending a message that we have had enough!"

Responding to his comment, supporter Christine Owen told him: "If you're as good [a] congressman as you are a horse veterinarian, then we're in good hands."

A client, Jessica Seary Ashley, posted that she was "sad to lose you as our vet but much happier to have you in Washington."

Yoho attracted national attention Aug. 14, when he narrowly upset Stearns in the primary despite having a campaign war chest of just $129,000, compared to the incumbent's $2 million. His victory Tuesday was much wider—65 percent to 32 percent over Democratic candidate J.R. Gaillot.

Born in Minnesota, Yoho moved with his family to South Florida when he was 11 and later married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn, according to a biography on his website. He earned his DVM degree from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. The Yohos have three children.

Yoho won't be the only veterinarian serving in Congress. U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader, 61, a Democrat from Oregon, was elected to a third term Tuesday.
