Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group of Akron, Ohio, has launched veterinary care insurance for companion horses. Policies will be underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Co. and produced by C&F Insurance Agency Inc., a Crum & Forster company. The company’s first policy was sold to cover a rescued miniature horse named Kachina at Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary in Ravenna, Ohio. “Companion horse owners, like dog and cat pet parents, need a product like veterinary care insurance that can provide financial reimbursement when the horse gets injured or becomes sick,” said Dennis Rushovich, senior vice president, Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group. The company’s ASPCA Pet Health Insurance Horse plan covers accidents, injuries, illnesses and more, and features simple reimbursement based on a percentage of the veterinarian’s invoice, the company stated. Coverage is currently available in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. Every policy includes colic coverage and the ability to add on preventive care for an additional cost. Plans come with a low annual deductible, limits that reset yearly and a multiple horse or pet discount. “The horse-human bond, similar to that of a cat or dog, is very strong. Companion horses are part of the family, and now owners have a way to protect their equine family members too,” said Laurie Jackson, Director of Operations, Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary.
