Photos and video courtesy AVMA Christmas is definitely on track this year! Santa’s reindeer have been cleared for takeoff after a thorough health check. Santa’s official veterinary team has announced Dasher, Dancer, and the rest of the reindeer are in great shape for their Christmas Eve flight. Sandra Faeh, DVM, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and Jamie Rauscher, LVT, president of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA), traveled to the North Pole to conduct health assessments on the reindeer to ensure they are ready for their busy night delivering gifts worldwide. The visit became particularly important when Dasher showed signs of keratitis (pink eye). Santa reported the reindeer was “not acting himself,” and requested Dr. Faeh’s help. With prescription eye drops, rest, and close monitoring by Santa and Elves, Dasher is now back to health. Festivities can continue as planned! “Dasher responded wonderfully to treatment and is back to his energetic leading role,” says Faeh. “It’s always a privilege to care for these incredible animals, and it’s reassuring to know they’re all in peak condition for their important global journey.” [embed]https://vimeo.com/1038639047/79a69f4c28[/embed] During their visit, Faeh and Rauscher focused not only on Dasher’s health but also thoroughly examined all nine reindeer for any signs of illness or injury. This included X-rays, blood tests, and inspections of their antlers, hooves, fur, and vital signs to ensure they were healthy for their journey. “Veterinary technicians are an essential part of every veterinary team, and working with Santa’s reindeer is no exception,” says Rauscher. “From diagnostic tests to ensuring the reindeer’s comfort during exams, it’s rewarding to play a role in keeping them healthy for such a key voyage.” In addition to the check-ups, the AVMA team provided Santa with a “North Pole Certificate of Animal Export” document, which confirms the reindeer meet international health standards and are fit to travel across countries. The visit also highlighted the important role veterinarians and veterinary technicians play in maintaining global animal health. Faeh emphasized that the care given to Santa’s reindeer represents the dedication of veterinary professionals to all animals, no matter their size or species. “This work reflects what veterinary professionals do every day—keeping animals healthy and safe while protecting public health,” says Faeh.
