Veterinarians will be performing free dog heart screenings in North Carolina, Maryland and Pennsylvania over the next couple of days as part of the Mobile Dog Heart Health Tour. The tour, sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc. of St. Joseph, Mo., is designed to educate people about congestive heart failure in dogs. Veterinarians will also be available to answer questions about heart disease in dogs, an ailment that affects about 11 percent of the nearly 75 million dogs in the United States, according to Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica. That figure increases to as many as 60 percent among aged dogs and certain predisposed breeds. The most common symptoms of heart disease are reduced willingness to walk or exercise, difficulty breathing, coughing, loss of appetite and weight loss, according to the company. The Mobile Dog Heart Health Tour dates and locations are as follows: • Saturday, April 16, from noon to 4 p.m. at Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh, NC. • Sunday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Druid Hill Park in Baltimore. • Monday, April 18, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Seger Dog Park in Philadelphia.
