Veterinary clinics, retailers, and dog owners across the U.S. are being asked to dispose of several lots of prescription dry dog food due to possible elevated levels of vitamin D. Nestlé Purina PetCare Company issued a voluntary recall of select lots of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) after receiving reports of two separate confirmed cases of dogs exhibiting signs of vitamin D toxicity upon consuming the diet. (Both animals have since recovered.) While vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to health issues depending on the level consumed and the length of exposure, Nestlé Purina reports. Vitamin D toxicity may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling. The affected dry dog food was distributed throughout the U.S. by prescription only via veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and other select retailers, Nestlé Purina reports. Bags of PPVD EL with the following Universal Product Codes (UPC) and Production Codes should be immediately discarded: UPCs: 38100 19190 – 8 lb 38100 19192 – 20 lb Production Codes: 2249 1082 2250 1082 2276 1082 2277 1082 2290 1082 2360 1082 2361 1082 “We apologize to pet owners and veterinarians for any concerns or inconvenience this situation has caused,” Nestlé Purina said in a statement. “As pet experts and pet owners ourselves, the health and well-being of pets is our top priority.” For more, contact Nestlé Purina at 1-800-345-5678 or via email here.
