Do you know someone who has contributed to making the veterinary profession great? Then nominate them for the American Veterinary Medical Association's (AVMA) Excellence in Veterinary Medicine Awards. There are several awards veterinarians can be nominated for, and they include, according to the AVMA: The AVMA Award, which "recognizes an AVMA member who has contributed to the advancement of veterinary medicine in its organizational aspects." The AVMA Meritorious Service Award, "which recognizes a veterinarian who has brought honor and distinction to the veterinary profession through personal, professional, or community service activities outside organized veterinary medicine and research." The AVMA Advocacy Award, which "recognizes an individual for advancing the AVMA legislative agenda and advocating on behalf of the veterinary profession. The AVMA Animal Welfare Award, which "recognizes an AVMA member for accomplishments in the field of animal welfare in leadership, public service, research, education, or advocacy." The AVMA Clinical Research Award, which “recognizes a veterinarian’s achievements in patient-oriented research.” The AVMA Humane Award, which “recognizes a nonveterinarian for accomplishments in the field of animal welfare in leadership, public service, research, education, or advocacy." The AVMA Lifetime Excellence in Research Award, which “recognizes a veterinarian for lifetime achievements in basic, applied, or clinical research.” The AVMA Public Service Award, which “recognizes an AVMA member for outstanding public service while an employee of a government agency or for education of veterinarians in public service activities.” The AVMA XIIth International Veterinary Congress Prize, which “recognizes an AVMA member who has contributed to international understanding of veterinary medicine.” The AVMF/Winn Excellence in Feline Research Award, which awards a Winn grant recipient who has contributed to the field of feline research. AVMF/AKC Career Achievement Award in Canine Research, which “honors a candidate’s long-term contribution to the field of canine research.” Nominations must be submitted by February 1, 2017.
