Purina recalls Purina Veterinary Diets OM cat food
Purina recalled one lot of its Veterinary Diets OM Feline Formula canned cat food on suspicion of subnormal levels of thiamine.

Nestlé Purina PetCare voluntarily recalled one lot of its Purina Veterinary Diets OM (Overweight Management) Feline Formula canned cat food today due to a possible subnormal level of thiamine (Vitamin B1), an essential vitamin for cats.

The company recalled the lost as a precautionary measure in response to a consumer complaint received by the FDA regarding the thiamine content of the food.

The recall includes 5.5 oz. cans with "Best By" date June 2013, production code 11721159 and UPC code "38100 – 13810." The "Best By" date and production code are located on the bottom of the can.

Cats fed exclusively from the affected lot for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency, according to Purina. Symptoms of thiamine deficiency include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop, including ventroflexion (bending toward the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, falling, circling and seizures. Purina recommends owners of cats displaying these symptoms contact their veterinarian.
