Campaign aims to screen 2,000 pets for diabetes

Led by Merck Animal Health, Purina, and Zoetis, the Diabetes Pet Care Alliance says early detection can lead to positive prognosis

Promoting early diagnosis and management of diabetes in pets is the goal of an ongoing national program, led by three major players in the animal health industry.

Headed by Merck Animal Health, Purina, and Zoetis, the Diabetes Pet Care Alliance encourages patient screening, owner education, and early intervention for dogs and cats with diabetes.

This year, the program hopes to facilitate the screening of more than 2,000 pets during Pet Diabetes Month in November.

"While a diagnosis of pet diabetes is never good news for a pet owner, an early diagnosis of this chronic disease could lead to a positive prognosis," the alliance says.

Formed in 2014, Diabetes Pet Care Alliance saw more than 1,900 practice enrollees last year. A record 1,404 new pets were diagnosed by participating practices during the program period, representing a 57 percent increase from the previous year.

Clinic enrollment will be open Sept. 1 to Oct. 31. Owners whose pets are diagnosed between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31 are eligible to receive free program kits with products to help manage their pets' condition, courtesy Merck, Purina, and Zoetis.
