With the cost of veterinary school basically leaving every student in massive soul-crushing debt, anything to help ease some of that is only a good thing. U.S. News & World Report came out with a list of scholarships that can help with just that. Here are a few of the scholarships they list: 2017 Pre-Veterinary and General Animal Husbandry Education Scholarship ($1,000): This scholarship from Golden Meadow Kennel is available to students in an accredited college interested in animal husbandry or pre-veterinary studies. They ask for a 1,000 essay one one of the following topics: The importance of the breeder in maintaining breed standards. Canine genetic defects and their role in a breeding program. General canine health concerns & prevention. They also note that “other topics will be considered as well, as long as they are directly related to dogs ie: health, breeding, training etc.” The deadline to apply is December 31, 2017. VSTONE Scholar Award ($5,000): Available from the Veterinary Scholarship Trust of New England, this scholarship is open to 4th- and 5th-year veterinary students. The students must have been residents of New England for five years before going to an AVMA-accredited vet school. Or they must have graduated from a New England school in any of the following states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont. Spurling OBE KCVO Scholarship ($10,000 in total): Available from the AKC Humane Fund, these scholarship awards $10,000 in total to five veterinary students pursuing degrees related to advancing responsible pet ownership. "We are looking for those students who exemplify excellence with academic coursework, volunteer work, experience and a passion for giving back to their communities. The AKC Humane Fund recognizes the importance of continued education for animal care providers as well as the public and believes that these exceptional students will become the true ambassadors for the human-animal bond," the AKC writes.
