Penn Vet Hires New Clinicians

Penn Vet’s Ryan Hospital welcomes three new clinicians while Penn Vet’s New Bolton Center adds to its equine field service team.

The University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) has appointed three new clinicians: Brady Beale, VMD, Dipl. ACVO, as staff ophthalmologist, Elaine Holt, DVM, Dipl. ACVO, as clinical associate professor of ophthalmology, and Michael Mison, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, as clinical associate professor of surgery.

“I am delighted that Brady, Elaine and Michael are joining the Ryan Hospital team,” said Bo Connell, executive director of Ryan Hospital. “They will fill key spots in our clinical services, allowing us to continue providing the highest level of expertise and care to our patients and clients.”

Dr. Beale returns to Penn Vet to join the ophthalmology team as a board-certified staff clinician. In 2002, Beale graduated summa cum laude from Penn Vet, where she served as president of the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association. After an internship at Penn Vet for small animal medicine and surgery, she completed a residency in comparative ophthalmology at North Carolina State University.

Dr. Holt received her veterinary degree with high honors from the University of Illinois in 1995. She completed a rotating internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City and a residency in ophthalmology at University of California, Davis. She then joined Penn Vet as a lecturer and a staff veterinarian from 2000 to 2005. Holt returned to the United Kingdom, where she was a lecturer at the Royal Veterinary College in London, then moved into private specialty practice in Surrey in 2006. Since returning to the United States in 2014, she has been engaged in private practice in north/central New Jersey.

Dr. Mison will join Penn Vet’s faculty as a clinical associate professor of surgery, spending most of his clinical time with the Comprehensive Cancer Care team in surgical oncology. Mison received his veterinary degree from the University of Florida in 1998 and completed a rotating internship and surgical residency at Michigan State University. He then joined the faculty of Washington State University in 2002, where he received the Carl Norden — Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award as a second-year Assistant Professor in 2004. Mison subsequently left Washington State University for private specialty practice, and in 2007 founded Seattle Veterinary Specialists as a managing partner. He maintained his enthusiasm for teaching by serving as a locum tenens surgeon/instructor at several other veterinary schools during his time in private practice.

In related news, Brian MacNamara, DVM, recently joined the equine field service team at Penn Vet’s New Bolton Center. He has also joined the Penn Vet faculty as assistant professor of equine field service in the Department of Clinical Studies.

Dr. MacNamara joins a team of equine field service specialists in providing preventative health care, reproductive services, evaluation and treatment of lameness and medical and surgical disorders, and on-farm diagnostic services.

“Brian has a vast amount of experience in high-level equine ambulatory practice, and he has managed and owned his own practice in New York,” said Barbara Dallap Schaer, VMD, medical director of New Bolton Center. “He has a unique background, including a law degree and didactic teaching at a university,” she continued. “In addition to his vast veterinary experience, we are looking forward to his input on growing our field service business.”

In his new role, MacNamara said he would like to increase the client base in the sport horse world and treat horses that are actively competing. He has a special interest in lameness and causes of poor performance in the equine athlete.
